Seeing the landscape, Carver must have realized he had found his mission in life. He would teach black farmers how to nourish the soil, grow better crops, and improve their lot in life. His mind was already full of agricultural techniques and ideas that he had learned from his professors. As Carver stepped off the train that idled on the edge of the small town of Tuskegee, where the clock tower of the redbrick Macon County courthouse loomed over the square, he was stepping into a different world. The only folks around were white. He would soon learn that African Americans only went to town on Saturdays to go to market. With his few personal possessions and his many academic specimens loaded into a wagon, he headed toward the school buoyed by a sense of purpose. Little did he know how soon he’d get that old sinking feeling in his heart again.
